Pet Expo at the Pompano Citi Center

The weekend of Feb. 20 was an exciting one! On Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 the Pompano Citi Center hosted a Celebration of Animal Love with their annual Pet Expo. The event was filled with vendors ranging from groomers to pet nutrition to, of course, PetPeePee.

Their were dog contests for all ages and people were happily shopping and browsing all of the vendors. Pictures are posted on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/PPP.America .

Another event that weekend was on Feb. 21 at the Levis and Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center called Dog Fest! It was a day filled with all kinds of dogs from Schnauzers to Bulldogs to Great Danes. There were approximately 30 vendors at the occasion and a large dog agility competition that had trained professionals walk the dogs through the course. They also had a raffle that included almost 60 items!

We, at PetPeePee, had our own raffle, giving away a Free Do It Yourself KIT (winner is to be annouced). Dog Bowl IV

On Sunday we headed out for another event at TY Park in Hollywood, FL. A beautiful park with large trees creating a canopy over the event. There was music set up thanks to Scott Evans Productions, (TheEntertainmentMall.com) who plays a variety of music for all, food on the grill, a variety raffle and appx. 20 vendors. The event was in support of Boxer Friends Rescue Group.

Our adjacent vendor was no vendor at all, but the Old English Sheepdog Rescue of Florida, Inc. Candy and her husband Steve started the organization 8 years ago when they adopted an Sheepdog from Animal Services. Once they got to the car they quickly realized something was very wrong with Mr. Archie. He was very badly taken care of and had cysts the size of baseballs. But luck was on his side, one year later Mr. Archie was happy, healthy and loving life. At this time, Candy and Steve have 11 Sheepdogs and puppies in their home that are awaiting a new loving and caring home. We all know of the city of commerce but did you know that their is a pet chamber of commerce? Designed to provide pet owners with efficient pet companies that can help them with their pet needs. The Pet Chamber of Commerce offers many services, check them out at www.petchamber.org.

A very special and outspoken cause was at the event as well, The Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation, where they are saving one breed at a time from Breed Specific Legislation. BSL means this: A statue or regulation that is directed toward one or more specific breeds of dogs. There are 75 breeds targeted by BSL among them are: American Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Siberian Husky and more. Its 8th year at Happy Tails Dog Park in Plantation, FL Doggie Palooza was an event for all dogs. All different breeds, big, small and even toy were there to enjoy contests, games, and a variety of appx. 50 vendors.

There were games, contests, and food.

Here is a list of some of the vendors that I had the pleasure of speaking with.

The first group that I came to talk with was Furry Travelers, which offers great products for dogs on the go. Not only do small dogs travel, but there are products for large dogs such as the Golden Retriever. They have backpacks that are suited for carrying dogs, they have life vests, safety vests and more. I also came into contact with a wonderful rescue group dedicated to Labrador Retrievers. Started in 2000, this rescue group has placed 3,000 Labs in loving, caring homes. An interesting service that I came across was Canine Assisted Therapy. Canine Assisted Therapy is one of the most noble, caring and comforting service I have ever encountered. Their mission is to deliver therapeutic relief through the use of dogs to children, and adults who need comfort, companionship and the unconditional love that only a dog can provide. The program places these dogs into facilities where their services are most needed, such as nursing homes, hospitals, adult daycare and schools. They also provide additional planned activities including benefit walks throughout the community; monthly get togethers at dog parks and more. Check them out at www.catdogs.org.

Another vendor at Doggie Palooza was an amazing artist that I will be bringing my dog to. Tommy Pop Art, custom studio quality acrylic canvas paintings. His art is one of a kind. A cause that I found beneficial and fully support is the petition for Citizens For Pets in Condos. It is dedicated to increasing acceptance of companion animals in condos and other types of association-run housing. The day started out cloudy and dark but it quickly turned into a day for the pups. As the event started at 12 noon, people we're bringing their pups dressed in the finest. Music was playing, there were dog games going on and businesses and rescue groups were enjoying the crowd.

One of the first rescue groups that we had the pleasure of meeting was the Friends of Greyhounds www.friendsofgreyhounds.org). A wonderful rescue group that focuses on saving greyhounds after they retire from racing. They are loving and sweet dogs that are looking for a good home. They have kennels in Sunrise and Hialeah.

Another rescue group that I met that had the cutest puppy I've ever seen was called Adopt-A-Bull Rescue, Inc. (www.adoptabullrescue.com) where they have all different ages of bull dogs. At the event they had two adult bull-dogs and one white puppy bull-dog that was cute as can be. Many people stopped by to give a kiss to the cute and cuddly bull dogs.

If you're looking for a place to keep your pup for the day, week or month, Chateau Poochie has all the amenities you need. As their slogan says, "It's a Dog's World" and, they mean it. Not only is it a hotel for dogs, but for cats as well. If your pooch demands only the best, than the Royal Suite is what your pup needs. If you love your pet and you want to immortalize them in a photo or in a painting then Sue Appleton Dayton can paint your pet or Tina Valant can take their photo. Sue Appleton Dayton is a magnificent painter that can take a photo of your pet (or in real life) and paint them onto any background you'd like. When walking by her booth, she showed me one of her dogs with a beautiful mountain scenery. She told me that her dog's favorite place was the mountains and decided to paint him in his favorite place. I also had the pleasure of meeting the infamous Diane Roadcap, The Pet Psychic. She and her team flew in from Virgina to this event to connect with her South Florida audience. She gave a couple readings on stage and even brought one woman to tears. Diane has a very special talent for talking with animals, and can even do a reading over the phone. And she doesn't just talk to dogs or cats, but to all animals. Her website is www.animalstalktoo.com.

I also came across a very interesting and new age method of entertainment, internet radio. But this is not your normal radio show, its a radio show dedicated to pets and pet's health! Bill Piechocki and Diane Sudduth are co-owners of Fiesta Pet Deli in Festival Flea Market Mall at 2900 W. Sample Road, Pompano. Bill Piechocki has a degree in animal science and 40 years experience in the pet industry including working as a pet nutritionist. He has raised show dogs and also trained dogs. Dr. Diane Sudduth has a DVM as well as master’s degree in Parasitology and Public Health. She also served as a Veterinary Medical Officer for the FDA and USDA for 10 years. Currently she consults for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries. Their radio show is unique and is broadcasted weekly. Check them out at pethealthcafe.com

If your looking for a trainer who knows what he's talking about, check out Shay from WooFDogs.com. He has the expertise and knowledge to train dogs from all ages. He holds private lessons, and teaches housebreaking, basic obedience and advance obedience, behavior problems, aggression managment and even protection training. As they say, "We speak your dog's language."

Another type of dog service at the event was 5PawPets where they have professional pet services such as daily dog walks, overnight pet sitting, luxury pet fitness programs, pet transportation and much more. Lastly, a very interesting woman that I met at the event is the shows coordinator for Doggie Fashion Shows, Brygida Trzaska. Seminole Coconut Creek Casino Bow-Wow Block Party

The Seminole Indian Coconut Creek Casino is hosting their first-ever Bow-Wow Block Party to help raise funds for the Animal Aid Foundation. The event will take place on Saturday, January 23, 2010 from 12 noon to 5:00 P.M.

PetPeePee System will be having a booth to support the Animal Aid fund. Groomers, vets, sitteres, kennels and other doggie business will be attending. We encourage any pet lover to attend and enjoy the festivites. Their will be Doggie Costume Parade and other events.

When You Can't Adopt, Foster...

Many know about the benefits and challenges of adopting pets. The time commitment, patience for training, the mental hardships that dog or cat has been through, money, and your current family status. Sometimes, people want to adopt but they just don't have these things and simply cannot do it.

However, there is an alternative to adopting, foster. Fostering a pet is almost the same as fostering a child. Your local humane society can partner up with a local pet store and bring pets out that need a good home until they find a permanent one, instead of being kept in a kennel for months on end. This way, the pet has human interaction and a loving environment for a temporary time. Of course, if you end up loving the pet, you can always adopt them.

The pros of fostering:

The humane society or pet store provides all the necessary items for the pet, such as crate, bed, and food.

Shots and other vet necessities are already taken care of.

You can test out different breeds, find out which one works best with your personality.

You can return the dog or cat back to the humane society if it is too demanding on your current situation.

You can personally find it a great home if you decide you cannot adopt it.

And, of course, you are doing a wonderful deed for the animal community.

Cons of fostering:

You don't know where the dog or cat has been, it may have serious behavioral damage.

You may fall in love with a particular dog or cat and are unable to keep it.

Every week (depending on the schedule with the humane society) you need to bring the pet in to try and get it adopted.

Training is recommended and encouraged.

Having a pet is demanding, they should be treated like additions to the family, therefore, if you don't have the time and effort for the pets, let another family who does have the time and effort take care of them.

When a dog follows you home...

As I went running with my sister in Athens, GA a small white and brown dog decided to befriend us. She ran to us and started jumping and nipping out of excitement. At first, we we're cautious, afraid the dog might actually bite us, but after a while we realized she was just a sweet pup in need of some love.

We tried to knock on the door that the dog was sitting at, but no one answered. She has no collar and seems pretty well groomed for a stray. So, we started walking with Nipper, we decided to call her, at our heels.

She followed us about 3/4 of a mile back to my sister's house and waited and waited to come inside.

At this point we meet at a cross road. She's sweet and lovable but a little aggressive. She may have flees and she might destroy the house, so we don't want to bring her in.

We called Animal Control and they simply said we have two options: bring her to the office and they impound her, hoping she will get claimed or adopted within 5 days or she gets put down. Or, we hold on to her for a little while and hope for the best.

So this I ask, what do you do when a dog follows you home?

Story of the Week

Starting this week, we will be righting about unusual pet problems.
Here, at PetPeePee System, we see very strange and interesting things, therefore, we have decided to share these stories with the rest of the world. Of course names of customers and specific details are kept confidential.

A Residential Pet Store

About one year ago we got a call from a nice lady asking us to come clean two rooms. This sounded like any other standard carpet cleaning job, so, we scheduled the job for the next Thursday. On that Thursday we encountered probably the most disturbing pet problem in the PetPeePee System history.

As we entered the house the lady directed us to the rooms that needed cleaning. Immediately we were taken aback. The room was covered in feces, diarrhea, blood, and other natural body waste. The woman then informed us that these rooms were housing birds, dogs, cats, snakes, rabbits, and ferrets. These rooms were appx. 12x12- very small rooms to hold so many animals. The rooms were cleared out because officials came and broke it up. It seemed that this house was a residential pet store.

She asked if we could clean the two rooms. Mr. Martin simply informed the lady that there was no way we would even attempt to clean the rooms since the health risk was far worse than the pay benefit. We don't know if the rooms were ever cleaned, but our guess is no.

Removing Pet Urine Odor

Pet Urine Odor

Pet urine odor is a special kind of scent. It is a scent that lingers and becomes worse over time, even after you've tried everything in your mom's special remedies box. There are several reasons that urine odor stays and becomes worse over time. Here they are:

Urine contains protein. After leaving the pet's body it quickly becomes bacteria in your carpet, area rug, draperies, and even hard floors.

By applying soap, deodorizer, and/or bleach, the bacteria starts to grow. At first, some of the bacterium gets killed, however, the remaining microorganisms grow and actually feed on the dead bacterium AND the soap, and/or deodorizer.

After the new bacteria is happy and fed, your carpet looks like a bomb landed smack in the middle of your room and left a brown/yellow stain.

So, the urine that was once just protein and bacteria, becomes a new beast that we like to call, PeePee Vanilla, the mix between the original scent of urine and your vanilla deodorizer.

Products Used to Remove Urine Odor

So, now you ask yourself, "I've used all these cleaning products, why is the urine still there?"
Well, considering urine contains bacteria, soap is not going to work, unless you can remove all of the soap AND urine. For example, you go to wash your hands after working all day in the yard. You take the soap, lather up, then walk away (skipping the rinse) and wipe your hands. There is no doubt that your hands would be sticky, disgusting and probably dirtier!

Therefore, soap is not a good idea. You may say, "well my product doesn't contain soap!"
If you question whether the product you're using contains soap, shake the bottle with cap on, remove the cap and check to see if soap suds protrude from the top. If this is the case, your product contains soap.

If you've given up hope on removing the urine odor and are now using products made for your kitchen, tiles and/or bathroom, then that product most likely contains bleach. And of course we all know, if you put bleach on ANY fabric that stain will NEVER come out. Same for the urine, if you apply that tiny amount of bleach to your carpet, area rug, or furniture, then that stain and odor will never come out.

How to Remove the Urine Odor

Big Brown Eyes... An Adoption Story

Pets are a special addition to our families. They become our friends, companions, babies and the loves of our lives. We would do anything for them and all we need in return are those big brown eyes looking up at us and you know that they will love you unconditionally and forever. Your most turmoil days become snow flakes that melt away when you greet your furry loved ones.

How ever your pet enters your life, they stay there forever, even after they're gone. For the life of Tracey, her pets have entered her life in a most noble and admirable way, adoption.
These dogs came into Tracey's home from unbelievable conditions and fates near death. Here is the touching and loving story of L.T., Madison, Doris, Aspen, and Hoover...

"L.T., my German shepherd, was a military police dog for a short while.
The original military handler had to sadly give the dog away because of his baby that had a serious condition that caused him to have seizures. L.T., being a very protective and loyal guard dog, would sometimes sense the seizures before they would even happen. He would nestle himself beside the child and stayed with the child to protect him. Unfortunately, L.T. was so protective that he would not let the paramedics, or even the parents go near the child. When the family moved from Colorado to N.Y. they decided to donate him to the state troopers because of his training and background. At the time L.T. was 4 years old and the troopers felt as though he wouldn’t be able to do the work they needed him to do, also, law enforcement felt that due to the intensive training that these types of dogs go through, they can be very aggressive and a possible threat to the general public. If these dogs feel in the least bit threatened they could become very dangerous. Therefore, they must be handled with extreme care. They were going to put him down because of these conditions, however, I decided to adopt him. I still must always be aware of my surroundings and who approaches him in an abrupt way. He is extremely intelligent, knows German commands, and is, of course, a great guard dog. He is 8 years old now and such a love bug! We love him so much!

I have another German Shepherd named Aspen. I recently adopted her last February. Her story is one that is of the most touching and horrendous nature. Aspen came from a place where they mass breed Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Persian Cats. They were kept in absolute filth and the most horrifying conditions. The lady that owned the place suddenly died and that’s when these animals were finally discovered. Aspen, along with many others were saved! It took two local animal rescue organizations (Peppertree and Keeper Rescue), working together, to clean them, house them, and give them all the MUCH needed medical attention. The animals were contained in 4x4 crates with no windows, no going outside, nothing! They ate, slept, gave birth, and went to the bathroom, all in their 4x4 crate, which was never cleaned. The groomer that personally handled Aspen noted that she was 8 years old and just had another litter of puppies. She had the worst heat cycle the groomer had ever seen, which was later discovered that she was loaded with ovarian cysts. They also discovered a large tumor on her mammary gland and had to have all her fur shaved off due to the wood chips, food, feces and urine, making it impossible to clean otherwise. When they shaved her, they found her skin with huge sores and other markings, from the uncleanly conditions. The saddest part of her story that we found out later, was that she was once a Show Dog with an amazing blood line, and was level 2 Schutzhund trained (specialized training, mainly with German Shepherds, for police work). She was purchased by these people and sent over from Germany when she was just four years old. When we first rescued her she constantly went in circles, as all the others do, caused by being captive in their 4x4 cells for many years. Today, she is slowly getting better and her circles are getting bigger and bigger! She is now a healthy, happy, cleaned and SPAYED dog! :)

Last, but certainly not least, is little Madison, my Chihuahua. I got her when she was just 6 months old. She didn’t have such a bad upbringing like the other ones, but she was unwanted because she was to be used for breeding and became too “big,” she was 14 inches tall and only 10 lbs. “HUGE.” Everyone wants the teacup sizes, which are unhealthy a lot of the times because the breed is not meant to be that size. Today she is two years old.

In the past I have always had rescues as pets. I had one Greyhound, Gottcha, from a track in West Palm Beach. One Basset Hound, Hoover, from North Carolina. He was also treated very badly, I knocked on the owners door one day and offered to buy him or turn her into the authorities. His nails were growing into the pads of his feet, which was just one of the very bad conditions. I had him for 14 years.

I also rescued Doris, another Basset Hound. She is from N.Y. and I found her at the Humane Society and she was part of the family for 10 years. Sadly, I lost them both, Hoover in January of ’08 and Doris in February of ’09. Of course they are always thought of and missed tremendously, but it opened the doors for Madison and Aspen to come into my beloved home, where they received the love and attention they so desperately needed.

I have decided that three is my limit, my teenage son, Corbett and I, see and hear of so many cases that, of course, you want to take in, but I feel that if everyone could just take in one, it would make such a difference! If the demand for “puppys” would decrease, maybe it would force these terrible back yard breeders out of business.

The most common reasons for cats peeing: something's wrong with the litter box.

First and foremost, if you have two cats, you need two litter boxes, if you 10 cats you need 10 litter boxes. Cats DO NOT like to share (in most cases).

Also, when cats use the litter box they demand privacy just like humans. So, putting a litter box near a door, or in an open hallway is unacceptable! My Experience at Jury Duty

If you are an American Citizen you know exactly what it feels like to receive that letter in the mail stating, "You are summoned to Jury Duty." Whether, you're excited or not, the timing is always inconvenient. On September 22, 2009 I, for the first time, went to the Broward County Courthouse to fulfill my duty as a juror.

After waiting for about two hours, freezing to death and sleeping straight up with my wry eye open, I was called to a specific judge. Then, after about another hour, close to lunch time mind you, I was called into the court room. Without going into specifics, we were basically asked to give some information about each of us (the jurors). One of the questions was where we were employed. Here was my response:

"I work with the family business," I stated.
"And what may that be?" The Judge asked me.
"My father invented a new company called PetPeePee," I answered.
"Oh? And what exactly is that?? That sounds interesting!" The Judge replied.
At this point I looked around the room to see the faces of the attorneys and the other jurors, and just like the Judge, they were all interested!

How To Tell If Your Oriental Rug Is Authentic

The wool on the back is sewn on, not glued

If it is made from real wool, cotton, or silk.

If the rug was dyed with vegetable dye or another high quality dye.
(How you can tell: If the colors have ever run, or stained your hard floor then your Oriental Rug is made with dye.)

If it was hand made with many details. (How you can tell if it is hand made: the lines are not straight and the details are not symmetrical.)

Some Oriental Rugs are machine made, in this case, the tag on the back will describe the material of the rug and the quality.

How To Tell If It's An Area Rug

The canvas backing is glued on to the back of the rug, typically on the back of wool.

The backing is latex, meaning when you rub your hand across it, it feels like hard glue.

Some rugs are even made from recycled materials, or a combination of synthetic material and wool. This also means, the colors will not run.

Tip: Never scrub the rug! Always clean with the nap, never against, and in the same direction. Otherwise you can ruin the nap and create an uneven pattern in your rug that may be permanent.

School has started, work begins, and another summer vacation is over.

After hours of being away from home our pets are beyond excited to see us, however, the past couple of hours have been spent alone.

When pets are stuck at home all alone, two things typically tend to happen, they destroy the house and tear apart anything they choose, or they pee in different areas of the house.

Lets Talk About Dogs!

Dogs are very active and like to be fully engaged for long periods of time. When they are left alone they have nothing else to do but cause chaos by tearing things apart, like our favorite pair of shoes, or our $75 pillow. Or, they decide to make the house their own personal back yard, which, who can blame them? A solution to this problem is putting the dogs in a secluded area, which can be good and bad. The good thing is your personals are protected from both destruction and urination. However, the dogs are prohibited from running around and releasing energy so when you come home and let them out, they are full of energy and are hard to calm down.

When you come home try to make a routine of taking your dog out for longer than 10 minutes. (If you really want to release his/her energy let them play outside for 20 minutes, remember they've been locked up for hours.) When they pee outside, reward them by giving him/her a treat, toy, or give some extra love.

Something to Calm The Nerves

Somethings Mr. Martin, Inventor and Owner of PetPeePee System, has come up with that will help with these certain scenarios:

Give your dog one or several chew toys that are durable, that way they can spend a couple of hours trying to tear it apart.

Give your dog a large bone to chew on that will provide him/her a chew toy plus a delicious treat.

If your dog is a roamer of the house, hide a treat somewhere that will engage his/her inner hunter.

If you have hard floors the best option is to place a Wee Wee pad somewhere that is convenient for the dog. Also, place an old towel under the Wee Wee pad so the pee doesn't seep through onto the hard floor. If the pee has seeped onto the hard floor our Do It Yourself Hard Floor product will provide excellent results to remove the urine odor.

Little Miss Kitty

Cats are almost like humans. They need attention, independence and a soft place to lay their heads. Cats, unlike dogs, do not need much to entertain them. They typically lay around and play with soft things such as toy balls and light, feathery things. However, something the cat does need is to feel very loved, otherwise they get jealous and vindictive. If they feel neglected they have a habit of peeing to get your attention. Here are some tips to make sure your little princess (or prince) doesn't pee around the house.

Change the litter box every morning,this is much better than at night time, because it will provide a fresh litter box for her/him to pee. Remember leave a little bit of the old litter in the box so he/she can smell the old odor. Cats are animals of territory and prefer to pee in an area they've peed before or where another cat has peed.

When you get home, pay extra attention to your cat so they don't feel ignored or unloved.

Something For The Pee

If you have carpet, oriental rugs or furniture, your best option is to LEAVE THE PEE ALONE. Do not try and use cleaning products that contain soap or bleach! To test your product if it has soap shake it with cap on, then remove the cap. If the bottle is suddenly alive with soap bubbles, then the product contains soap. If you can apply the soap and remove it effectively then proceed, however most people do not have this ability. A comparison we give is if you wash your hair and don't rinse the soap out, after a while the soap becomes a magnet for dirty things.
